![]() Gilbert was just a five-month-old kitten when he was hit by a car and rushed to the vets. His injuries were so bad that he had to have his leg amputated. The vet sent Gilbert to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Cattery for some TLC and to see if any owners came looking for him. No one did, so the centre decided it was time to find him a new home. Vicky Strong, and her boyfriend Francis, fell in love with Gilbert within minutes of meeting him. Gilbert is now part of the furniture and the family, and they couldn’t imagine life without him. And Vicky tells us that he doesn’t miss that leg one bit – he happily tears up and down the stairs at home! Tell us your happy tails. There is a risk that even more chickens may be allowed into already overcrowded sheds, making it hard for them to even walk or flap their wings. Is this how you want the UK to treat its animals? If not, please join us in urging the Minister for Animal Welfare, Mr Jim Fitzpatrick, to quash the squash and reject this backwards step for chicken welfare. We urgently need you to take our e-action as the decision will be made soon. Write to the government now! ![]() Six areas in England have now been chosen for Defra’s Badger Vaccine Deployment Project. Badgers in areas of Staffordshire, Herefordshire, the Cotswolds and Devon will be receiving the vaccine against TB in the first such project outside of research trials. Farming representatives, vets and farmers will all have input to the project, which we hope will prove to be a viable alternative to culling badgers. Vaccination is expected to begin in summer 2010. ![]() We carried out an unusual rescue this month after a stoat became trapped in the grille of a car. He travelled 30 miles and was stuck overnight until the unwitting motorist discovered him the following morning. RSPCA Inspector Laura Jones took the stoat, who had amazingly avoided injury, to the vet.Read the full story and watch a video taken by the driver. ![]() Our international team sprung into action this month after a massive oil spill in Norway endangered the lives of over 1,500 birds. In response to the disaster an emergency centre has been set up, where we have been assisting with the rehabilitation of the 34 species of bird affected. International aid officer, Coralie Farren, said: "It is terrible to see so many birds affected by this spill - but thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, most of the birds that are brought to the centre will have a good chance of survival".Read the full story. | New look newsletter It’s nearly time to launch the new look newsletter, and thanks to your feedback, we’ve really been able to take into account the things that you want to see - everything from more ‘happy tails’ and campaign updates, to a clearer layout. Laws for lab animals - update We are still lobbying hard behind the scenes for a better EU law regulating animal experiments. Dr Penny Hawkins of the Research Animals Department recently took part in discussions relating to how levels of animal suffering are determined and limited. "It’s so hard to take part in these discussions when you don’t want animals to suffer at all", says Penny, "but it’s vitally important that we are there to speak up for the animals." The new law won’t be finalised until at least 2010 so we'll let you know when you can help with our lobbying again. Buying a puppy? Thinking of buying a puppy?
